H. Lee Kefauver, a cherished father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Monday, November 18, 2024, at the age of 83, surrounded by family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his aunt Helen (who raised him after his mother became too ill) and his beloved wife, Judy.
Born on August 29, 1941, Lee joined the Navy in 1958, proudly serving his country for four years. After his military service, he pursued his passion for electronics at DeVry Technical Institute, earning an Associate's degree in Electronic Engineering. In 1964, Lee and Judy moved to Albuquerque, where he began a distinguished 32-year career with Sandia National Laboratories, retiring at the age of 56.
Lee was a man of diverse interests and talents. He found joy in camping, motorcycling, and playing sports such as volleyball, racquetball, and tennis. In his later years, he delighted in acquiring and displaying various collections, which filled his home with cherished memories. At 81, Lee fulfilled a lifelong dream by purchasing a cherry red Camaro, a testament to his zest for life and meticulous care for his possessions.
Known for his optimistic outlook, Lee had a remarkable ability to bring laughter to those around him with his well-timed jokes. He lived life on his own terms, leaving a legacy of joy and resilience.
Lee is survived by his half sister Kathie Bush, his children, Susan and Rick, his daughter-in-law Rachel, his grandchildren Audrey, Megan (and her husband Alan), Kyler, and Lexi, and his great-grandchildren Lena and Emma. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude's; one of Lee's nine cherished charities:
