Marion Gayle Van Horn

(Marion) Gayle Van Horn, a well-known local artist and businessman, passed away peacefully (Romans 10:9) at his home in Albuquerque, 12 June 2023, with his wife and family beside him.
Gayle was born 10 Sep 1937 in Paducah, Texas and started drawing and painting as soon as he "was old enough to pick up a pencil." Gayle developed his God-given talent in paintings of New Mexico's natural beauty. Intending to "capture every nuance, every flicker of light, and every detail possible", he became a master at "realistic" painting in watercolor. He painted over 2000 oil and watercolor paintings, over 200 wall murals in custom built homes, the exterior murals on the Old Creamland Dairy buildings, the official posters for two NM State Fairs and restored historic ceiling art panels in the Shaffer Hotel in Mountainair, NM. Gayle has been the main Artist for the 2926 Steam Locomotive Restoration Project in Albuquerque since 2003 and has worked with the Albuquerque Wheels Museum since 2005. He made a living as a Commercial Painter and owner/operator of a Commercial Painting business, but Gayle always made time to do what he truly loved - to draw and paint. He had studios in downtown Albuquerque and in Mountainair where prints of his work are still available in the Shaffer Hotel gallery. Many of Gayle's paintings currently hang in the homes of the families that built Albuquerque over the last 50 years.
Gayle leaves behind his wife Linda, sister Vana, children Brad, Michael, Greg, Melissa, Kristi, Brett, & Lindsey; eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at the Historic Shaffer Hotel in Mountainair, NM on Saturday, 15 July 2023 at 1:00 PM for close friends and family.
